Miley Cyrus has been in the spotlight for so long that, even at 17, she is far too savvy to be accidentally flashing her side-boob cleavage to photographers.
She’s done both in the past month, and it’s no accident according to psychotherapist Dr. Gilda Carle.
No, it’s no accident that this bizarre behavior has occurred while her parents — Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus — have been preoccupied as they prepare to divorce.
Miley may be a celebrity, but she’s no different than any other child whose parents are divorcing. No kid, even a 17-year-old, wants her parents to split up or have her family fractured. Children, including Miley, want a secure world. They want to be with both parents who they love and they want their parents to be together.
Miley just told MTV last week that for her 18th birthday, her biggest hope is to “maybe take a vacation with my family because that would be really cool. I think we need time to all be together … so that would be rad if we could all go to the beach or something.”
It’s sad. She can’t accept that her whole family isn’t going to be anywhere together in the conceivable future.
She is trying subconsciously to force her parents to come together. According to psychotherapist Dr. Gilda Carle, “Miley knows what is appropriate and inappropriate. Exposing herself is an act of defiance. She’s acting out — acting like a bad girl, so sexualized, because she wants to force her parents to jump back in and act like her parents again and stop her.
Children of divorce, like Miley, often take it upon themselves to try and maneuver their parents back together and that’s exactly what Miley’s trying to do by publicly acting out.”
What could be even more damaging to Miley longterm, is guilt. According to Naughty But Nice Rob over at PopEater, Miley blames her own success for her parents’ divorce and “would give up every dollar and gold record she ever earned if her dad Billy Ray and mom Tish would agree to give marriage one more try.”
She believes her parents focused on her career to the detriment of their own relationship: “Children blame themselves all the time when their parents split up,” says Dr. Carle. “Miley has a lot of guilt and the only way she can remove it is if she can get her parents back together, first of all, by forcing them to discipline her in unison, but she may also be subconsciously sabotaging her career by destroying her wholesome image, which has been so popular.
She wants to destroy it because she blames her career for breaking up her family and in her subconscious mind, if she screws up her career, it can’t be to blame anymore and mommy and daddy can get back together.”
Wow! That’s heavy, but you know what, it could very well be true. Poor Miley, watching your family fall apart while taking on the blame burden. Hopefully she’s seeing a therapist as sharp as Dr. Carle who will help her to see that she’s not responsible for her parents’ sad decision to split.
