Ricky Martin told Oprah today that he wants to teach his kids the importance of honesty and truth, and that was what motivated him to come out of the closet.
Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin, 38, admits that the reason he revealed that he was gay back in March was for the sake of his 2-year-old twin sons Matteo and Valentino. “My kids gave me all the strength to come out,” Ricky told Oprah in an interview that aired today. “They gave me the final push. If I didn’t come out for them, what was I going to be teaching them? I don’t want my family to be based on lies. I want them to be proud of their dad, of themselves and their family.”
Ricky, who had a surrogate deliver the boys, just couldn’t wait to be a dad. “I always wanted to be a father,” he says. “I have beautiful memories with my dad.”
And when it comes time to explain to the boys about their mother, Ricky is prepared. “I’m not there yet,” he says. “I’m going to tell them, ‘I wanted you in my life so bad. I love you and you love me and that is the most important, and not every family is the same.’ I am mom and I am dad. And I’m going to do my best. I am part of a modern family.”
Ricky couldn’t be more proud of his kids. “Valentino is a noble boy, he’s always sharing,” brags Ricky. “He puts others first. Matteo is outgoing. He’s alpha and he takes care of his brother. He loves books.”
Aww! Sounds like fatherhood is the best thing that ever happened to Ricky!
