Jessica Simpson was out with her new love Eric Johnson when she accidentally dined at the same spot as her ex-hubby Nick Lachey and HIS GF Vanessa Minnillo. Here’s how you can survive the awkward situation!

It’s one of the most potentially awkward situations of all time: you run into your ex while out with your new man. Chances are, both men have seen you naked. Add in the fact that your former BF has his new girlfriend out with him, toss in some slight, lingering jealousy stemming from past ownership on your part and you’ve got one serious recipe for disaster.

Although everyone involved seemed to be in good shape when they left LA’s Red O restaurant on Oct. 21, we don’t know exactly how Jessica Simpson handled introducing her new man, Eric Johnson, to ex-husband Nick Lachey (who was out with his longtime girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo) when the couples accidentally decided to dine at the same place last night.

Chances are, given that Jessica and Nick divorced in 2006 after four years of marriage, this situation was more civil than a recent break-up would have been. Regardless of how sticky the situation may seem, here’s what you need to do to make the great ex-run in more bearable!

  • #1: DO NOT AVOID. Go up, say hi, be cordial. Ever heard the expression “kill with kindness?” Well, do that.
  • #2: BE COOL. I’ve always really appreciated when an ex’s new GF has sent over a drink or a shot while we’re at the same establishment. It implies that — even though she may not be OK with the situation — she’s trying (or pretending) to be. An A for effort!
  • #3: MINIMAL EFFORT GOES A LONG WAY. There’s no need to sit and chat for ages, to ask your groups to meld or even to say goodbye. Keep it short, sweet and get the heck out of there. There’s also no need to backtrack and say goodbye when exiting the restaurant — simply wave on your way out. You’ve survived.

Tell me, HollywoodLifers, how YOU would deal with such a potentially awkward situation. Has this ever happened to you before? Was it awful or are you OK?

You mention “awful.” Know what’s awful? This blog. Who cares what you think about anything. Tell us about the lives of Hollywood folk.
