This is a heartbreaking story — Michael Douglas’ last wish is to make sure that his wife Catherine’s dream of having another baby comes true!

Michael Douglas must be the most caring and loving husband in the world. Despite the fact that he’s battling stage 4 throat cancer, he is still putting his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ priorities at the top of his list. Since last year, Catherine has been wanting to have a third child and, according to Star magazine, Michael is going to make sure that she’s able to, even if it’s the last thing he does.

“Michael broke down and told her that he wanted her to be able to have another baby with him more than anything,” a source tells Star magazine.

“My priorities have completely reversed from career-kids-wife to wife-kids-career,” confesses Michael, 66, who just finished five weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

“Family sources believe he decided to have to have his sperm frozen before starting treatment,” another source says. “He didn’t know what was going to happen, and I’m sure he didn’t want to leave anything to chance.”

Freezing his sperm gives Catherine the ability to conceive no matter what happens with Michael’s health. “Chemo really destroys the sperm,” explains Dr. Kent Holtorf. “It may come back, and it may not. It’s really uncertain what the fertility potency will be after you have treatment.”

But despite reports of Michael’s health deteriorating, Catherine, 41, seems to be maintaining hope that her husband will be around to help her raise a little one. “She thinks a baby would give him the extra determination he needs to keep fighting,” says a source.

Catherine’s plan sounds like it might work as the actor admits that his children — son Dylan, 10, and daughter Carys, 7 — lift his spirits. “Do you know what absolute happiness is?” asks Michael. “For me, it’s to wake up my kids in the morning and find they’re so happy to see me. It’s unequivocal love!”

“A baby would give both of them a new lease on life,” confirms a source. “For the first time in a long time, Michael and Catherine are hopeful about what the future holds in store!”
