The actress and beauty industry icon give us the scoop on this season’s efforts to raise awareness.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and leading the charge again is beauty industry giant Estee Lauder. I had a chance to sit with the lovely Evelyn Lauder and company spokesperson Elizabeth Hurley as they kicked off their month-long campaign at the Bloomingdale’s flagship. Here’s what they had to say:
HL: We all know that self-examination is very important. Can you tell our readers your thoughts on self exams?
Evelyn Lauder: With regard to self-examination, the fact of the matter is that 80% of all tumors are found by the woman herself and it usually very early on. So self examination is very important. It’s also very important to do a mammography if you’re 40 years of age or older.
Elizabeth Hurley: I know two of my friends under 40 who have both found lumps, both had breast cancer and both had breasts removed and they both found them on their own using self breast examination. It’s very important. We know our own breasts best. Experts say that you should check them the same time every month because breast tissue can alter during your cycle. One of my friends actually found one on her rib cage because she was wearing a bustier and it was annoying her. She discovered breast cancer and had since been a seven-year survivor with a double mastectomy. So, definitely do regular self exams!
HL: What about the recent studies that say that mammograms might not be as effective as we think? What are your thoughts on that?
Evelyn Lauder: I know there have been studies recently challenging the validity of mammography and I think it’s because insurance industries don’t want to pay for it. If you ask radiologists and diagnosticians, they all say that because of mammograms, they can actually pick up tumors before they could be found almost any other way. It is so important to actually do a mammogram. They’re proven and effective.
HL: Elizabeth, as a busy mother, how do you manage not to miss your mammograms?
Elizabeth Hurley: Well, Evelyn actually paid for my first one for my birthday, so every June I actually do it at the same time on my birthday and that’s a great way to remember how to do it.
