The Live With Regis and Kelly star knows that having three kids means you need to stick to a routine in the morning — no matter what!
Kelly Ripa may look like a tiny spark plug of a woman, but she’s really a lionness, especially when it comes to raising her kids. How else could you explain that she puts a padlock on tween daughter Lola’s closet after the 9-year-old picks out what she’s going to wear to school the next day? Wait, a padlock? Really? Yup!
It seems the morning ritual that Kelly, 40, and her husband Mark Consuelos, 39, have to get their three kids (Lola has an older brother, Michael, 13, and a younger brother, Joaquin, 7) out of the house and off to school was hampered by Lola’s indecisiveness about her fashion choices. “She’d change school clothes 14 times; it was interfering with the morning ritual,” Kelly says in the new issue of Good Housekeeping magazine. “So now she picks out two options the night before, and we put a lock on the closet door.”
That’s right, strict mom Kelly makes sure to establish boundaries with her kids, telling her daughter, “You picked it out last night, and I don’t see what happened since then that these no longer are good options. Put one on.”
It’s not all work, work, work, though. Each night, Kelly makes sure the family gathers around the dinner table to get that face time so many busy show business parents miss out on. “Sometimes it’s 6:30, sometimes 7:30, sometimes it’s going to be pizza or takeout,” she says. “It’s important to have that time together as a family. We have some very deep conversations. Mark and I are from the generation where children were seen and not heard, but my kids have great insights and their own opinions about everything.”
