Feel the need to lighten up like the Hollywood actress? We went to the experts to tell you to do it safely.

No doubt that the ever-changing hair look of Katherine Heigl has gathered much attention and in case you haven’t noticed, the star has gone from brunette back to her signature blonde locks. Looks great, right? Want to try it? Before you run to the drugstore and buy a hair coloring kit, read this expert advice.

So, a word of advice to anyone considering going from brunette to blonde: consult the experts, which is exactly what I did to make sure any of you considering this does it safely to prevent possible permanent hair and scalp damage. I called celebrity colorist and Redken consultant Tracey Cunningham, who has worked with such beautiful stars as Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Richie.

I asked Tracey to weigh in on the safest process to take hair from brunette to blonde. She says, “When changing your color from brunette to blonde, I do not recommend trying it at home; always work with your trusted (preferably Redken) colorist to avoid doing major damage to your hair.  This process, depending on your natural color and how dark your brunette tones are, can take some time, so be prepared to make multiple trips to the salon.  When you transition to blonde from brunette, you have to strip color away first, which can do serious harm if you don’t take care of your hair between steps.  ALWAYS make sure that your salon professional is using a coloring system like the Redken Chemistry System between steps to ensure that the hair remains moisturized.  As you add the blonde color in, be sure your colorist uses Redken Shades EQ Conditioning Color Gloss to maintain the shine and health of the newly lightened hair. This will ensure a safe and healthy transition to a gorgeous blonde color.”

Once you’ve gone blonde, you’ll want some products to make sure that the color stays clear and true (not brassy or green) so be sure to invest in some Redken Blonde Glam Shampoo and Conditioner for daily maintenance. You’ll need to do a deep conditioner once a week like their Color Extend Rich Recovery, which will help keep your hair in excellent condition as well as maintain a healthy color.  If you’re going to add heat styling to your routine, always make sure to use Extreme Iron Repair to protect your locks and try and use as little heat as possible to protect your new color.
