The actress and director, who split in March, are obviously making an effort to co-parent their children.
Famous exes have to get along, too! That was the clear message this past weekend in New York City when Kate Winslet, 34, and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Sam Mendes, 45, got together to watch their son Joe, 6, play in his youth soccer league. To be fair, ever since the couple split back in March, they appear to have gone out of their way to keep the process civil, arranging their schedules so that they avoid awkward run-ins and refusing to comment about their ruptured marriage.
The speculation was that the couple’s union fell apart during the making of the 2008 Oscar-nominated drama, Revolutionary Road, when Sam directed Kate and Leonardo DiCaprio in a heavy and depressing movie that featured a steamy sex scene between Kate and Leo. She said when the movie came out, “‘I just kept saying, ‘This is too weird.’ Leo told me to get over it, but I said, ‘You’re my best friend and he’s my husband. This is definitely a bit weird.'”
Kate and Sam are clearly following in the footsteps of friendly exes like Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, who have even been traveling together in order to share the responsibilities of co-parenting their daughter, Nahla, 2. Kate has been down this road before, reportedly maintaining a civil relationship with her first husband Jim Threapleton (who’s the father of her daughter, Mia, 9), but as anyone who’s been through a breakup knows, it’s not easy. We say well done, Kate, you’re setting a great example!
