Nina, you’re due in December. So everyone wants to know, what’s your go-to pregnancy outfit?
Right now I’m sticking with lots of drapey, soft knits and my favorite pair of cargo pants — pieces that always make me feel comfortable. And a great jacket pulls the whole look together and makes it feel more me.
What are your general dressing do’s and don’ts for expectant moms?
The biggest maternity-wear don’t is too much fabric. Don’t try to disguise your bump or you’ll resemble a tent. Instead, celebrate your new, changing shape. Comfort is key, so look for natural, soft fabrics that move with you and make you feel at ease whether you’re at work or just hanging out at home.
Are there items every pregnant woman have in her closet?
I live in simple cotton V-neck tees and drapey silk trousers at home. At the office, I like tailored A-line dresses and tunics. And a light, belted cardigan or a slightly unstructured blazer works well with just about everything.
Should moms-to-be skip the heels or wear them till the very end?
Whatever works for you. If you love heels and you can wear them through your third trimester, go for it. Ballet flats or brogues can be just as adorable and chic, though, so there’s no reason to suffer in heels if you don’t want to.
Which stars do you think have had great maternity style?
Of course, Heidi Klum wears pregnancy beautifully — she always looks so glowing, happy and healthy when she’s got a baby on the way. And Cate Blanchett and Jackie O. are two style icons who know how to put together a maternity outfit. Both were the picture of elegance throughout each trimester. All three were huge inspirations for Look Book.
What maternity lines do you especially love?
Heidi’s lines, Loved and Lavish are wonderful, and so is Fierce Mamas by Christian Siriano. Target has a fabulous selection of maternity clothes too. I especially love the ones designed by Liz Lange.
Dressing right after you have the baby can be tricky. Do you have any style tips for new moms?
We have to take it easy on women who’ve just had a baby — fashion is the last thing on our minds. Don’t try to squeeze into your pre-pregnancy clothes right away, and remember your new baby is your best accessory. Your job post-delivery is to bond with your new son or daughter, not look impeccable from head to toe!
When it comes to food cravings, do you fight them or give in?
There’s no point in trying to fight pregnancy cravings, you’ve got to give in at least now and then. I’ve been craving tons of fruit, so I’m lucky. It could be much worse!
Have there been any play dates on set at Project Runway between your son Lucas, 3, and Heidi Klum’s kids?
It’s a little too hectic on set for playdates, but my family and Heidi’s get together when we can. And my son adores Michael [Kors] — he’s great with kids.
How does Lucas feel about being an older brother soon?
He is really excited. It wasn’t hard to tell him [we had a baby on the way], because my happiness was contagious. I’m sure there’ll be some jealousy at first, but we’re making sure to include him in all the preparations so he won’t feel left out.
Is your husband, David, fashionable or do you have to help dress him?
My husband couldn’t care less about fashion, which is why I adore him. I give him my opinion when he asks, but for the most part he wears what’s comfortable and he lives in a suit for work.
Do you think your kids will be effortlessly fashionable like you?
One can only hope!
