The Fox News anchor is leading the charge of outraged citizens up in arms over Jen’s comment that women don’t need a man in order to have a child. But I think she’s right — and he’s wrong.
Oh, boy. Nowadays it’s getting to the point where a celebrity can’t express an opinion without getting criticized. This week’s target is America’s Sweetheart Jennifer Aniston, whose new film, The Switch, is about a 40-year-old woman who decides to go the turkey baster route in order to have a baby. In an interview promoting the film, Jen said, “Women are realizing more and more that you don’t have to settle, they don’t have to fiddle with a man to have that child.” And considering the number of single parents in this country, I think she might have a point!
Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly had Jen clearly in his sights last night when he declared that she was “destructive to our society” and was singlehandedly going to increase the teen pregnancy rate in the US because, “she’s throwing a message out to 12-year-olds and 13-year-olds that, ‘Hey, you don’t need a guy. You don’t need a dad.’”
Wait, what? Just when in Jen’s quote does she mention teenagers???
The first thing I thought of when I heard about Bill’s rabid rant was Murphy Brown. Does anyone else remember when vice president Dan Quayle criticized the fictitious single mom back in 1992, complaining that she mocked ‘the importance of fathers, by bearing a child alone, and calling it just another ‘lifestyle choice.’”
Gee, we’ve come a long way in 18 years, haven’t we?
What Mr. O’Reilly is failing to realize is that families nowadays come in all shapes, colors, sizes and genders. According to figures released by the US Census Bureau last year, there are 11.5 million single moms in this country, and almost 40 percent of those mothers are aged 40 or older. Whether it is through divorce, death or choice, these women are tackling the hard job of raising their children on their own, and they (and the more than 2 million single dads out there) should be praised for the job that they are doing not criticized.
The same report from the Census Bureau also revealed that just over one in four of all children under the age of 21 in this country are being raised by a single parent. It’s a staggering figure, and a damning indictment of the concept of matrimony, but I’m sure Bill O’Reilly doesn’t want to talk about that.
