Liam and Stella McDermott look cool, but an expert says their shades are not just a cute accessory, they’re essential protection for all kids!
If you’re a mom, you’re probably slathering your kids with sunscreen all summer long, but there’s another important thing you should be doing to protect them from the sun — make your children wear sunglasses! Sure, Tori Spelling‘s kids, Liam, 3, and Stella, 2, look like mini Hollywood stars with their cool shades, but their smart mom is saving them from countless eye problems in the future, says Los Angeles pediatric opthamologist Dr. Roger Friedman.
“Kids should wear sunglasses to protect them from the ultraviolet rays in sunlight,” Dr. Friedman tells HollywoodLife.com. “You want to limit a child’s exposure, and the younger you start, the better.”
The damage caused by UV light can lead to cataracts and even skin cancer on the eyelids. So what sort of sunglasses should you buy for your child? Dr. Friedman says that the color of the lenses doesn’t really matter, but they should be dark and the glasses should be comfortable, so that your kid won’t want to keep taking them off.
“For a parent, the first thing is you want them UV filtered, and glasses will come with a little sticker ensuring that,” he says. “Additionally, for children especially, you want to get them polycarbonite lenses for maximum protection.”
So, there you have it! You’re not the only member of your family who needs some seriously cool shades!
