Ashlee Simpson is Right! Experts Say Carrying Your Kid Is a Great Workout

Who needs the gym? Fitness expert Kathy Kaehler says Ashlee is getting a workout every time she picks up her 2-year-old son, Bronx.

There’s no denying Ashlee Simpson is slim, but when she was asked about it by the LA Daily News, she said it was all because of her son, Bronx Wentz. “I have lots of stairs at my house and my son is 33lb now, so I carry him up the stairs a lot.” Can that really have an effect on your fitness? “It can,” says fitness expert, author and mother of three, Kathy Kaehler. “It’s a way you can add resistance to any type of movement during the day. You are going to burn more.” In fact it’s a lot like weight training, because as the baby grows you are increasing your strength and endurance.

Moms like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Garner, who double up and carry more than one kid at a time are actually better off, as Kaehler says that can help by adding balance. But if you’ve only got one child, she recommends keeping them positioned in the middle to save your back or switch sides often.

If Ashlee really wanted to give her arms a workout, she could do something more than just carry Bronx on her hip.”You can even do pliés or chest presses,” says Kaehler, who admits she used her three kids as weights when they were younger.

But based on how skinny Ashlee currently looks she probably doesn’t need to add any more to her fitness routine. She admitted she also hits the gym when Bronx is down for a nap. “I’ll do 30 minutes of cardio and I also like a class called Cardio Barre [aerobic-ballet workout],” she confesses.

So next time you see a celeb toting an oversize tot, remember this: they’re secretly fitting in a workout!
