'Degrassi' Returns Tonight & Breaks Barriers With Its First-Ever Transgender Character! Will You Be Watching?

I hope you’re all ready to “go there,” because Degrassi returns TONIGHT (July 19) with six weeks of new nightly episodes — and one very controversial new character!

Abortions? School shootings? Puh-lease! Everyone’s favorite Canadian teen drama, Degrassi, has already covered that ground. But this season, which kicks off at 9 p.m. tonight on TeenNick with an epic two-hour movie, will finally introduce a character not yet represented at Degrassi Community School — a transgender student! The character, played by Jordan Todosey, goes by the name of Adam, despite being born as a girl. “The writing is good,” Jordan tells CTV News. “They really go there with that kind of stuff and I think that this character can really speak for anybody who is outcast or bullied or transgender or anything like that.”

Adam won’t be appearing during the two-hour movie, but will make his appearance later on this season. You still have plenty to look forward to until then, though, including a surprise (drunken) wedding between two of the show’s original cast members AND a shocking on-the-mouth kiss between siblings Declan and Fiona! (They’re clearly trying to steal AnnaLynne McCord‘s thunder.)

I guess I should also take this opportunity to confess my unabashed love for Degrassi, easily one of the greatest gifts we’ve ever received from our neighbors to the north. It’s Canada’s answer to 90210, which basically means the storylines are more intense, but the production (and often acting) values are significantly lower. It’s basically the ultimate guilty pleasure, and has given us so many treasures over the years, like Drake, Nina Dobrev and even Shenae Grimes.

I know I’m not alone in my love for this little Canadian gem. It’s time to fess up! Who else loves this show and will be tuning in TONIGHT for the two-hour movie, The Heat Is On?

Here’s the trailer, in case you need a little incentive to tune in:
