Sorry ‘A-Team’ but it looks like kids ruled the weekend and little Jaden Smith had no trouble destroying the competition!
Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, and Liam Neeson lost out in the battle of the 80′s remakes to a very young and very pint sized foe at this weekend’s box office – 11-year-old Jaden Smith! Our sister site Deadline Hollywood reports that The Karate Kid earned an astounding $56 million over the weekend, over double what it was predicted to make. As for big action flick A-Team, which had been expected to revive the sumer box office, it could only walk away with an underwhelming $27 million. Wah-wah!
This news means that since the release of Shrek Forever After, this week’s third place finisher with $15.8 million, on May 21, the box office has been topped every weekend by a children’s film. It seems like families are forgoing the draw of big name stars and nonstop action to spend the weekends watching more family friendly fare. In fact, the only action film that has kept up with expectations is the very kid friendly Iron Man 2, which was released in early May.
It looks like colorful ogres and kids with dreams, not explosions and older cosmopolitan women wandering the Middle East, is what audiences want this summer.
