Elton John, Harry Connick Jr. and even Justin Bieber have all been reportedly asked to take Simon’s American Idol seat, but Fox has a better idea on how to pick the judge — and it involves YOU, America!

Now that Simon Cowell has said goodbye to American Idol to start work on his new show, X-Factor, finding his replacement is top priority over at Fox. Sources are now telling HollywoodLife.com that the Idol think tank has thrown out a VERY interesting idea on how to replace the cranky British judge. In typical AI fashion, they’re enlisting the aid of your votes!

“Fox has ZERO clue on the replacement for Simon and are taking as much time to pick the replacement as possible,” a show insider reveals to HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “They have thought of a handful of [people], but are seeing what America hangs onto when rumors are spread!”

In addition, producers may air a two-day special in which America actually VOTES for Simon’s replacement! “They have been throwing an idea around that this fall they would have a two day special where America would vote for the next American Idol judge. Since the guest judges worked so well last summer [when auditions are taped in August]. they might bring those people back for the special.”

But there’s a twist! “The twist would be that former Idol winners and cast-offs would be the judges, flipping the script, so to speak, so the Idols and America would be able to pick the next American Idol judge.”

It sounds like we’ll either have a celebrity musical artist or a former Idol star in Simon’s hot seat…now THIS is an idea we can get behind! If this possibility does become a reality, who are some of your top picks to go under America’s radar?

I think Gene Simmons would be great! He has a personallity and also was a producer before he formed KISS. Also Robert John Lang, Shania’s husband would be great, he produced AC/DC, Def Leppard, etc.

I recommend Gene Simmons!!!

Bret Michaels has apparently been asked if he’s interested, although they haven’t offered him the job, they just wanted to know if they should consider him. He’d be a good choice. But he was only good, not great, when he was a judge on Nashville Star and he really isn’t someone who can brutally honest which is something a Simon replacement would need to be.

A really good replacement would be John Barrowman. He’s basically Simon with an American accent. He has international appeal as he’s Scottish (although he was raised in Chicago, thus the American Accent) and is very well known in the UK for being on Dr. Who and Torchwood plus he has extensive experience as a singer in both the Theater and as a recording Artist. He’s also been a judge on several talent shows in the UK and he’s possibly more brutal than Simon but at the same time he’s also very likable while he’s tearing someone apart just like Simon is.

Another good choice would be Dave Navaro. He was a host and something of a judge on Rock Star Supernova and did a fantastic job. He’s both knowledgeable and brutally honest. And he’s absolutely nothing like any of the other judges and would offer a totally different perspective than any of the others.

Yeah, David Foster would be excellent. I also like Harry Conig Jr. – Queen Latifah and I really liked “Posh” Beckham as a guest judge even though I am not a fan of hers. If it turns out to be Bieber I will never watch the show again – that would just be complete idiocy!!!!!!!!

Well, who has had a successful music career (performing or as a producer) that has fallen into relative obscurity and would benefit most from this experience, but still has a “tell like it is” style? That person would, in my opinion, need to be bigger than life, as well. Something to create a lot of buzz…buzz that would be sustainable.

Now, I know he wouldn’t do it, but if AI wants come back to the top of the tv ratings, Paul McCartney would be awesome! But I think he would be more like Paula Abdul in the sense of praising even bad singers because he wouldn’t want his squeaky clean image tarnished.

But on the other if he were honest, he might be even more respected….if that’s possible. But it would certainly be a step down for HIM.

David Foster would be my choice. When he was a mentor a few seasons back he had no problem with telling the contestants like it is and he is an established music producer, responsible for the careers for many A-lister music artists.
