One of So You Think You Can Dance‘s most memorable contestants chatted with me about the upcoming season, his favorite choreographers and how he keeps all his dance moves straight!
When So You Think You Can Dance season four’s runner-up, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, was cast an All-star in the upcoming season of Fox’s hit dance show, all of us fans rejoiced! Today I had the pleasure to chat with the self-proclaimed “Entertainer…and superhero” about the new and improved SYTYCD format and what qualities he’s looking for in the top 10 contestants.
KB: In one sentence how would you describe the major changes on this season of So You Think You Can Dance?
tWitch: We’re mixing the new with the old…which will create a new. I think it’s kinda cool. Rather than falling in love with 20 new people, you get to see now [10 people plus the All-stars].
KB: What can you tell us about the contestants? Have you seen them yet?
tWitch: Nooo…I’ve had a lot of friends who tried out…but they are on lock-down with that.
KB: So you’ll see when we see?
tWitch: Yeah. The season premiere is May 27.
KB: What qualities do you look for in contestants?
tWitch: First and foremost, is that vulnerability to let go of the ego and let everything happen. [They should] be ready to humble themselves and work very hard.
KB: Which hip hop choreographers are coming back?
tWitch: I’m not sure yet. I don’t know who’s on deck to return. I’m hoping Dave Scott will come back… and Tabitha and Napoleon. I’m hoping for some new blood.
KB: New blood? Would we know them?
tWitch: I’ve got my hopefuls. They are very new to the scene.
KB: What makes Tabitha and Napoleon so special? Everyone — even my grandparents — love them!
tWitch: [laughs] They have an understanding of movement. They [understand the] way the emotions connect with the movement as well. [Plus] you get that chemistry of the husband and wife pair doing choreography.
KB: Mia Michaels is back! How will it feel to be getting critiqued again? Or are the judges just critiquing the contestants?
tWitch: I’m pretty sure that they will have some things to say as well. I’m excited more than anything. You have a little big of the nervous energy too…the pressure is on.
KB: What are you doing to prepare?
tWitch: I’m taking classes, working out, doing memory exercises to learn choreography.
KB: Memory exercises?
tWitch: I have a little Nintendo DS. They have a game on their called Brain H. You got a little puzzle…memory exercises. I get to work out and play them.
KB: That’s awesome — I love that you get to play video games to help you on SYTYCD. Before we wrap up, what’s your biggest piece of advice for incoming contestants?
tWitch: Just get ready to work hard. Focus to rise up against anything. Even when you’re feeling tired and fatigued, focus up — and above all, have fun.
