Guest mentor Jamie Foxx wanted these two besties to sing Diana Ross’ and Lionel Richie’s “Endless Love” on American Idol — thank goodness they didn’t listen to him!

Magic was made on the American Idol stage last night. Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze took the competition to a whole ‘nother level with their simply gorgeous take on Once’s Oscar-winning song, “Falling Slowly.”

Crystal,
24, called Lee, also 24, her “musical crush” May 11 — but this level of vocal harmonizing and passion made their friendship seem like a full-blown love affair. Perhaps Jamie Foxx was a better mentor than I originally thought: he taught the contestants to bring some drama to their performances, at least.

But although the 42-year-old Oscar winner clearly gave the Idol hopefuls some acting lessons, his song selection choice leaves a lot to be desired. He tried to have Crystal and Lee sing the Diana Ross and Lionel Richie duet “Endless Love.” Barf!

“Once is my favorite movie,” Crystal said during a chat in the American Idol green room post-show, “So I suggested it.”

Agreed Lee, “I liked it. It was new to me, and when Crystal suggested it, I loved it.”

He added that season 8 winner Kris Allen’s own magic moment to the same song last year didn’t affect him in the slightest. “If anything, it drove me to do [the song] more,” he said, adding, “We’re different artists.”

Different artists indeed – but I fell quickly for BOTH versions of this song. Kudos to you, Crystal and Lee — this was, hands down, my favorite Idol moment of the season!

Different indeed :)
It’s a beautiful song….thank goodness Crystal didn’t take the advice of mentor Jamie who seems to have gotten over his personal space issues from The Soloist. Don’t think it was quite up to the original or the Kris Allen version, but Crystal is amazing and there hasn’t been much of that on Idol this season.

Absolutely gorgeous…so much emotion and chemistry. They absolutely have to be the final two!
