Harry Connick’s wife isn’t the only one who loves Lee. Gauging by their behavior when the cameras stopped rolling last night, these two doppelgangers are well on their way to becoming new besties!
Lee DeWyze is the man to be these days. Not only was he the contestant with the most votes on American Idol May 5, but he was clearly mentor Harry Connick Jr.’s favorite new friend. The two got on like a house on fire when the cameras weren’t rolling!
After the remaining Idol hopefuls sang a medley of the crooner’s songs, Lee, 24, and Harry, 42, stood around talking intimately through the commercial break. When Harry took the stage later in the evening, he playfully pushed Lee off of his ‘safe contestant’ stool while the two grinned chummily at one another. Perhaps they get along so well because, as Harry said on Tuesday’s show, “[Lee] looks like a new and improved version of me!”
Lee wasn’t the only person impressed by Harry’s voice, wit and hotness (OK, I threw that in there for me). The judges all had the option of bailing on the singer’s performance of “And I Love Her”, but all returned to their seats AND gave him a standing ovation. And despite their good-natured ribbing, he and Ellen DeGeneres seemed genuinely affectionate; she even hung out with him after his performance while Kara DioGuardi, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson bolted backstage.
What else did you miss? Kara, 39, and Simon, 50, acted like elementary school kids with crushes on one another during the show. I’m going to liken their relationship to the 10-year-old boy who puts gum in your hair because he really wants to kiss you. Yeah, I went there. For a good two minutes the two couldn’t stop poking, prodding and giggling at one another.
Kara is quite the frisky little thing! While Crystal Bowersox, Casey James, (the departed) Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche and Lee all sang a Connick medley, Kara sat on Randy’s lap and rocked out while host Ryan Seacrest took her seat and schmoozed with Simon.
Also getting touchy-feely: a fan clad in neon yellow who bum-rushed the stage to give her Idols lots of lovin’. She couldn’t seem to get enough of Lee, hugging him three times before turning her affection to Mike and Aaron.
Speaking of Aaron, well, I can’t say I’m sad he’s gone. He was the weakest link, goodbye. But at least Simon did right by him, giving the 17-year-old singer an awkward hug/pat on the back when the cameras stopped rolling. Yup, that’s showbiz, baby.
