The TV legend passed away the morning of April 10.
“This has been a terrible blow to our family,” Dixie Carter‘s husband Hal Holbrook said in a statement April 10. “We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy.” Born in McLemoresville, Tenn., 1939, Dixie is best known for playing interior decorator Julia Sugarbaker on the sitcom Designing Women, a role she portrayed from 1986 to 1993. More recently, she received an Emmy nomination in 2007 for her turn as hellish mom Gloria Hodge on Desperate Housewives.
Her final film, That Evening Sun, premiered at South by Southwest in 2009, and featured Dixie acting alongside husband Hal.
