Kathryn Bigelow Makes Oscar History! First Woman to Win Best Director!

Director Kathryn Bigelow onstage during the 82nd Annual Academy Awards held at Kodak Theatre on March 7, 2010 in Hollywood, California.As Barbra Streisand, who presented the award, put it, “The time has come.” Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman in the history of the Oscars to win Best Director for The Hurt Locker!

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win Best Director in the 81-year history of the Academy Awards, and she’s only the fourth to be nominated: Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, and Sofia Coppola were also nominated.

“There’s no other way to describe it, it’s the moment of a lifetime,” said Bigelow during her acceptance. “This is so extraordinary to be in the company of such powerful, my fellow nominees, such powerful filmmakers who have inspired me and I have admired for, some of whom, for decades.”

Her film also won the biggest prize of the night just moments later, Best Picture.
