Renowned British designer Alexander McQueen has died, according to reports.
Alexander McQueen has died at his London flat of an apparent suicide at 40, according to the company that owns his self-named fashion house.
“He has passed away,” a spokeswoman for Gucci Group told The Wall Street Journal of the world famous designer’s death. The news was first reported by The Daily Mail (UK). His family just released this statemen:
“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen [who went by Alexander McQueen], the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”
According to the Journal, McQueen’s Twitter feed was removed this morning. He had revealed on Feb. 3 via Twitter that his mother died the day before.
New York fashion week just began today, and McQueen was scheduled to present his collection during Paris fashion week less than a month from now. His suicide follows that of his close friend and designer, Isabella Blow, who committed suicide in May of 2007.
