After weeks of speculation, Simon says … he’s finally making his departure official. Sob.
Oh Simon Cowell, say it isn’t so! We’ll get down on our hands and knees and beg you not to go. The American Idol judge announced what we’ve all been unhappily waiting for — that he’s waving bye-bye to the hit Fox singing show so that he can launch the U.S. version of Britain’s X Factor program late next year, Deadline.com reports.
“There’s been a lot of speculation partly because we didn’t have an agreement. We reached an agreement at half past 10 this morning. Where we have come to is X Factor will launch at 11 in 2011 with me judging and producing the show,” he told reporters Jan. 11 at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
Simon, 50, even capped off his proclamation by dramatically signing his new contract at the event in front of press (atta boy, Simon, always working the ratings system!)
But just because he’s leaving Idol doesn’t mean Simon’s going to stop scouting for new, fresh talent. With X-Factor, the show that made Leona Lewis an international superstar, we can definitely expect to see Simon offer his typically caustic words of wisdom to aspiring singers (translation: telling subpar songbirds they’ll never make it in the biz!)
