Can Two Recovering Addicts Like Charlie Sheen And Brooke Mueller Have A Successful Relationship?

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller will only save their marriage if they stay “on the wagon” and away from booze, an addiction expert tells

Recovering alcoholics Charlie Sheen, 44, and his wife Brooke Mueller, 32, had both been drinking the night of their now very public domestic dispute, breaking the golden rule for addicts: staying away from all booze. If the couple doesn’t sober up fast, they run the risk of ruining their marriage.

When police responded to Brooke’s 911-call late Christmas Eve that Charlie had assaulted her with a switch-blade, she was drunk, blowing a .13 BAC, and Charlie had some alcohol in his system, blowing a .04 BAC. But according to addiction specialist Marty Brenner, neither Charlie nor Brooke should have been drinking at all.

“If you’re an addict and you have one drink, that will lead you to two, which will lead you to three, and so on and so forth. That’s what will happen without any questions asked,” says Brenner.

Even though the couple broke the rules on Christmas Eve, there is still a glimmer of hope for Brooke and Charlie’s three-year relationship if they completely lay off all alcohol and drugs, Brenner explains.

“What they had might have been a lapse, or a little blurb. If it was just a screw up, then they have a great chance of staying together,” he says, optimistically.

On the other hand, if their drinking is a regular occurrence, the eventual outcome might be hopeless. “If this was a regular elapse—which means it goes straight to addiction—then they really need some help.”

In order for this marriage to work, Brooke and Charlie must see a counselor immediately, Brenner advises. “If they both go to seek treatment, work on relapse prevention and work together for the sake of [their nine-month-old twin boys], Brooke and Charlie’s success rate could be very high,” our expert predicts.

Brooke has allegedly hired a divorce lawyer, so there’s a good chance this union may not end in happily ever after. However, we hope for the sake of their twins, 9-month olds Max and Bob, that Charlie and Brooke pull it together!

With my experience with recovering addicts, is that 2 addicts work better together (if they are actively working the steps) than an addict and a normie.

And most addicts relapse. It’s a part of the disease.
