Ladies, you flocked to the sci-fi epic this weekend!
James Cameron must be thrilled — his latest big screen feature, Avatar, is a worldwide success! Deadline.com reports that Avatar pulled in an incredible $27 million Friday, $25.6 million Saturday and about $20 million Sunday in the United States, bringing its domestic total to $73 million on its opening weekend. That’s amazing! And to think that number would have been even higher if a snowstorm hadn’t kept northeastern moviegoers from leaving their homes. Deadline.com attributes the 5% drop on Saturday to the terrible weather.
Now let’s talk about all the records this movie is breaking:
- 20th Century Fox says it’s their highest opening for a movie that isn’t a sequel and isn’t part of a franchise.
- It’s the highest grossing debut for director James Cameron
- It’s the highest opening weekend for a 3D/IMAX movie
- It’s the second highest December opening of all time, just behind I Am Legend‘s $77 million opening in 2007
Seriously, James Cameron — enjoy this incredible victory. It’s a terrific movie and you should be proud!
