Bryant Gumbel, 61, announced this morning on Live! With Regis & Kelly that he is battling lung cancer.
The former Today show anchor said that he had a malignant tumor removed from his lung two months ago. He was keeping it very quiet until this morning—he revealed that he even kept it from his staff at Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, his show on HBO.
Depending on the stage at which it is caught and the treatment prescribed, the five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 14%. Other celebs have publicly battled this deadly disease as well: Peter Jennings, Humphrey Bogart, and Dana Reeve, Christopher Reeve‘s wife, to name a few.
“I’m okay for the time being,” Bryant said. “I’m hoping they green light me to play golf again.”
