Wouldn’t you freak out if this happened to your daughter?

A family friend of Billy Joel tells HollywoodLife.com that the singer is having a lot of difficulty handling daughter Alexa Ray Joel‘s recent drug overdose. “Alexa Ray and her dad spend a lot of time together, they are very close,” the friend tells us. “He is freaking out.”

It’s also possible Billy may blame himself for putting so much pressure on his daughter. Another pal tells us: “Alexa Ray has had a horrible few years. She’s been put in the middle of her mother and stepfather’s nasty divorce, and her father’s split as well. She’s only 23. It’s really hard on someone at that age. She’s always been torn and made to choose sides. It’s very sad.”

“Regardless of what Christie [Brinkley] says, she was close with Peter Cook, and her dad’s divorce just devastated her,” the pal continues. “She and Katie Lee were really close friends. She’s had a lot to deal with for someone so young.”

In an interview with American Songwriter in 2007, Alexa said one of her favorite songs of her dad’s is “Lullaby,” because she knew he wrote it for her. She also said she has a lot in common with her dad, including a little-known shared interest in classic musical theater. When asked about the best advice her dad had given her in terms of her songwriting, Alexa said: “He always says to treat your songs like they’re your babies, and to not let anyone mess with them, to be protective of them.” Sounds like a great dad to us!

Do you really need any further proof of how close the two of them are? It’s no wonder he’s having such a difficult time dealing with this situation.
