Love Lauren’s long locks? Find out her extension secrets!

Lauren’s extensions are so natural, “most people don’t know she even has them,” confides her stylist, Kristin Ess of the Warren-Tricomi salon in Los Angeles. To make the texture of Lauren’s hair look and feel natural, she uses extensions that have a mix of hair from Russia, Italy, India and Asia. “I can color-match Lauren’s hair perfectly,” she says. “If you’re a half shade off, everyone can tell it’s fake.” Lauren likes Kristin to use 18-inch extensions (the longest ones available). “She feels most comfortable with her hair being long and pretty. It’s her thing,” Kristin adds.

Most extensions, like the kind you sew in or attach to individual strands can take up to 6 hours or more to attach! Kristin’s cut her process down to one hour using a waterproof medical grade tape that adheres the extensions to Lauren’s natural tresses. “Once two pieces of this tape touch each other and are sealed with a very, very low heat, they’re not coming apart for months unless they’re doused in my special remover,” says Kristin. A set of them can last Lauren anywhere from 3 to 8 months depending on the amount of heat styling she’s been doing. She does have to go in occasionally during that time for adjustments which can take about two hours.

So, what’s Lauren like at the salon? “We both have issues sitting still for a while so we like to watch Hulu while we do her extensions,” says Krisin. “Right now we’re watching episodes of Glee.”
